Technology in focus: HHC & MSR

The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE leaves the production line fully equipped. Two new features are available as options: HHC “Hill Hold Control” and MSR “Motor Slip Regulation”.

A high-end travel enduro like the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE needs to excel with comprehensive comforts for rider and pillion. Consequently, the white machine with the cultivated 160hp twin is particularly well-equipped: Semi-active WP suspension components, ride-by-wire, and EMS engine management with four riding mode settings (Sport, Street, Rain, Offroad), MSC motorcycle stability control, which regulates traction control and ABS subject to angle of lean, LED cornering light, 30-liter tank, adjustable sitting position (handlebar, foot pegs, seat height), daytime running light, tapered aluminum handlebar, spoked wheels, tire pressure monitoring TPMS, adjustable windscreen, immobilizer, luggage rack and case carrier, handguards, steel crash bars, plus side and center stands.

Furthermore, both heated grips and a seat heater are fitted as standard for the first time on a KTM. These comforts are operated via the dashboard menu control system with a multifunction switch that allows the rider to activate or deactivate the features, and select the desired heating level. In turn, the passenger can control heating of the pillion seat separately with one hand via an integrated switch on the grab handle. Standard equipment also includes the cruise control system, which regulates speed automatically when required and is actuated via the right-hand handlebar controls.

The 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE’s MSC can be supplemented optionally with an engine drag torque control system, or MSR for short (motor slip regulation). The machine is already equipped with a slipper clutch that regulates shifting mechanically, so that there’s no rear wheel chatter as you shift down when decelerating rapidly. MSR provides additional assistance if it identifies an impending difference between front and rear wheel speed when decelerating on surfaces with a low coefficient of friction. If this is the case, the ride-by-wire function increases the engine speed, so that the rear wheel does not even start to slip.

In practice this means: If the rider releases the throttle abruptly on slippery asphalt, for example on wet road markings, or if the clutch meshes too quickly, then an unstable situation may arise, since large-capacity V2s have a relatively high engine braking torque. MSR intervenes as a precaution here by deliberately raising the revs automatically when decelerating to prevent impending rear wheel slip.

ABS System

ABS System

Hill Hold Control, or HHC for short, is another optional comfort feature. It prevents the motorcycle from rolling back when it comes to a stop on a slope, which would be particularly unpleasant when fully loaded or riding two-up. Such situations are detected by the inclination sensor in combination with other parameters, whereupon the rear brake is activated automatically. When moving off again, the brake disengages synchronously as soon as the rider twists the throttle and engages the clutch.

Hill Hold Control is regulated by the ABS control module and only works when the bike is at a standstill. The necessary mechanics and electronics are already on board – the feature only needs to be enabled by software at a KTM dealership. This means that customers who want to do without this feature are not dragging around any additional components. Anyone who tries hill hold control for themselves will soon appreciate its impact. If the rider releases the brake at a standstill, HHC maintains the braking effect for up to five seconds or until the machine moves forwards. It makes riding off smoothly without rolling back easier than ever on the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE.
