In sync with the launch of the benchmark shifting 2023 KTM SX models, the multi-AMA Supercross and Motocross champion continues to break down key phases of a motocross race and some of the pieces of wisdom that served him well through a decorated career both Indoors and Outdoors.

After guiding us through some of the preparation criteria, mental and physical demands and then explaining race starts, Dungey now dips into those crucial first moments in a Main Event or a moto. He talks about how several of the new aspect of the KTM SXs – the chassis concept, new swingarm and hybrid subframe, the innovative new footpegs, to name only a few technical specs – all help to create that feeling of confidence and comfort to be able to push to speed.

As usual, the short video is particularly revealing when Ryan remembers some of his own experiences and how success and failure ultimately contributed to a record-breaking career. “It’s like you’re sprinting on those first laps; a lot of guys are swapping positions, there is a lot going on,” he says of the opening stages of a race. “Your position is important, and you have to make sure that you can go with the guys but at the same time: keep calm! It can lead to a mistake otherwise. You have to let the race play out. You don’t want to settle too much but at the same time you’ll get the chance to make passes.”

Understandably, Supercross is a much tougher ask for planning. “The track is narrow, there are obstacles, the track can be rutted. You really need to be on high alert,” he counsels. “You need to be able to predict what you are going to do but also what the others will do. Experience will also help to make sure you are not in situations you want to avoid. I remember some races where it didn’t work out for me and others where a first lap attack was necessary for championship points.”

As well as imparting his knowledge Dungey also reveals how much the connection with his mechanic helps and what specific messages he needs for his race progression.
